We have a cat that is about a year old and just got a kitten that is 12-13 weeks old. The issue we are having is that the kitten seems to have attached itself to our other cat. Everywhere our older cat goes, the kitten is right on his heels. We have to hold are kitten just for the older cat to use the restroom. When we separate the two cats, the kitten just whines and whines and whines. If she can not see the older cat she continues to whine. Please help with suggestions and ideas. Will this behavior soon stop? We are worried that the kitten will get into a bad habit and not be independent.

What is the best way to separate my two cats from each other

That behavior is very very normal for kittens who NEED an older cat to show them how to be a cat. Do not stop the kitten from following nd bonding with the older cat. As the kitten matures, the habit will gradually disappear. In the meantime, let Mother Nature'' takes its course & do its work! When we adopted a stray 2 month old male kitten, he also shadowed our older cat & copied everything he did. It was cute. The older cat actually taught the younger one how to sleep, where to sleep, where NOT to go, how to poop & pee & where to poop & pee, how to defend itself, which things to avoid, etc etc. You should count yourself fortunate that the kitten has taken on to the older one soand the older cat tolerates it. If ur older cat has good manners & good habits, u will be assured that the kitten will grow up to have good manners & good habits - all from learning from the older one.

I do not think they need to be separated unless the older cat is just reallllly irritated by it. I got a kitten who followed my oldest cat around constantly. They even curled up to sleep together. My older cat actually liked having the company & even groomed the new kitten. Now that the kitten is grown, he is not clingy & is quite independant, but they're still best of friends & will still groom each other every now & then. They're both males & some people find this behavior strange, but it is comfortable to them. Because they have that bond with each other, I do not feel as bad when I am away from the house for long periods of time.

Take one of the cats to your neighbors house and ask them to watch it for a couple of weeks.

the new kitten probablly just misses her family and so she is doing with your older cat what she did with her mom...if they are not hurting eachother let them be...as the kitten gets older she will gain her own independance and they will be good friends...

We had a similar problem with cats the same ages. We asked the vet and they said we should not separate them and that they will assume a natural order sonn enough. It worked out very well. Both cats get along wonderfully and each is independent. Good luck!
