Do they understand when you pick them up and kiss them that you are being affectionate or what do they think? Is it possible to teach cats to peck (kiss) you on the mouth? Has anyone done this?

my cat rubs against my head and legs. That is a cats version of a hug.
my cat will rub his nose on mine, or nose my cheek/chin if i'm laying down. i've given him little eskimo kisses since we got him at 8wks and he jumps up to give them now, i guess it is whatever form of affection you show towards your cat that it is used to. he understands when you cuddle him really close to cause he purrs louder. :]
Purring and headbutting / rubbing is the natural way for a cat to show affection.
My cat mirrors gestures that I make aswell, so if I squint my eyes at her, then she squints back. If I put my face to hers and kiss her little forehead, then she will put her face to mine and wipe her nose on my forehead (or sometimes lick me. ick).
My cat Izzy would reach up gently grab my cheek and pull me down to him and lick my lips.
Yes, they understand. And my cat loves it! He likes to nuzzel our foreheads together. And he loves to kiss me on my neck, and I kiss him on his neck and forehead. When he gets a little ''over'' loving, he will give me a nip, like a love bite. They understand affection, praise, and nice soft voices.
I say give me a kiss and mine push their nose/forehead to my mouth they can not pucker though so its really just a trained behavior more for me than them. they rub on me when they are the ones seeking affection.
The closest thing to a cat kiss, is when they gently take a piece of human skin between their teeth & hold it for a few seconds. (This does not hurt, it feels like a gentle pinch).
Other signs of affection r rubbing up against ur face, to exchange scent with you, as this reinforces the bond between you. Sometimes when u r sitting down, they will place one paw on ur knee & the other on ur cheek, to let u know they want to rub faces.
One of my favourites signs of affection is feather dancing. When a cat wants to let u know how happy it is to see you, they adopt the tail up posture, tail a-quiver & treading/dancing with the hind feet, trying to lift its rump higher. They may give a little chirp at the same time.
Keep ur cat happy & they will find their own endearing way of showing u affection.
They rub against you!
I tell my cats to ''give me a kiss''. I have cheek rubbers, head butters & a nose toucher. No real kisses. Of course they r independent creatures & will only do so if they feel like it.
Each cat shows affection different. One will insist on a tummy rub another will rub against me & want chin rubs. I have one that will get on my shoulders & wind around my neck, give me chin rubs & generally make a pain of herself.
I do not think they understand when u kiss them but they do understand affection
Both of my kittens do the following when they r being incredibly affectionate & want to show their appreciation in a kissy-way:
-Knead with their paws on mine or my husband is chests, legs, shoulders.
-Suck on our cheeks, arms, try to suck on our lips, & even my husband is nose.
-Bite - a gentle bite or sometimes a quick hard one, while purring, & licking u with their tongue. This is the best kind & this is considered a 'cat kiss'. If they r scratching u when they bite they r playing, but if they just walk up & suddenly nip you, r nip u when u r petting them & they r purring, it is considered to be a cat kiss.
Cats show affection when they gently dig into you with there paw. It feels like it is giving you a massage. It also shows affection when it rubs it is cheek on you. I taught my cat to lick my cheek.
My cats , Rub there Teeth Along side of my forehead , an arms , Kind of marking me with there sent , they lick the hell out of my face too ! to me that is a kitty Kiss !
To kiss a cat you stare into their eyes for a couple seconds then close your eyes slowly and then look away slowly. When you look back they should close their eyes after looking into your eyes.
I think that cats purr when they like you
OK. a cat kiss? not bad. But on the MOUTH!
EWWWWWWWWWWWWW
they rub their heads against u to show affection.
Cats are very affectionate. When they rub against you, that is affection. When they blink slowly at you, that is affection. When they sleep on you, they are showing you affection. I do not have to teach my kitty to kiss me. He tries to do it all the time.
Purring and rubbing there head on you while stroking them. =)
I think they do understand that you're showing them affection. In order to show me affection my 7month-old kitten will lick me, gently nibble on my fingers, follow me, sit on me, head butt me, and curl up with me when sitting down reading.
What my cat does when he shows affection his he rubs his nose against mine. Sometimes just simply petting them when they want to be is to show affection. I do not know if it is possible to have cats peck you on the cheek but it is possible to rub cheeks. ;)
